 Spring 2009  Sophmore Year

Central 2, Jackson Liberty 1: Alexis Majury hit a ball to center field that resulted in an error and allowed Ashley Aires to score in the top of the first and doubled and scored on Fran Troiso’s single in the fourth. Katelyn Pepper struck out 14 and didn’t walk a batter while giving up a run on four hits to improve to 3-0. Pepper had thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings before Jackson Liberty scored in the sixth on a double by Jessica Oliveira. The Lions got the tying run to second in the seventh when Dana Jefferson reached on an error with two outs and advanced on a passed ball, but Pepper struck out Taylor Cwalinski to end the game. Cwalinski, who took the loss, struck out 13 and walked two. Kelsey Corraggio was 1-for-2 with a walk for Central. Linnette Siedler went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Jackson Liberty.

Jackson Liberty 5, Pinelands 2: Linnette Siedler went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and freshman outfielder Brianna Gonzalez hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh to increase Jackson Liberty’s lead.

Jackson Liberty 3, Point Boro 2: Liz Russo tripled in the first inning to drive in Linnette Siedler, who led off with a bunt single, and scored on a passed ball to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Russo, who went 2-for-3, also scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third to increase the lead. Alexa Saltzman struck out 14 and walked one to earn the win. Nicole Casey was 1-for-2 with and a double and walk for Point Boro, which scored twice in the top of the seventh to make things interesting before suffering its first division loss of the season. It was the Panthers’ first game since April 9.

Jackson Liberty 8, Central 2: Jess Oliveira went 3-for-4, and Linnette Siedler was 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Lions. Alexa Saltzman struck out eight and walked none while giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits. Alexis Majury tripled for Central.

Jackson Liberty 6, Howell 2: Anne Vreeland and Samantha Galucci each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lions. Taylor Cwalinski, who also struck out eight and walked two to earn the win, went 1-for-3 with a walk, scored a run and drove in two. Linnette Siedler was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Alexa Saltzman went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Gabriella Ciacciarelli went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double for Howell, and Gabrielle Ambrozia was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Jackson Liberty 1, Point Boro 0: Taylor Cwalinski struck out 13 and walked none in a two-hitter, and Sam Conner drove in Linnette Siedler with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. Siedler reached on a double leading off the inning.

Linnette Siedler and Robyn Czapkowski: I don’t like to do co-anything when it comes to recognizing players for any kind of award, but I didn’t have a choice here. The Nos. 1 and 2 hitters in the Jackson Liberty lineup, Siedler and Czapkowski gave Freehold fits, reaching base in seven of their combined eight plate appearances and scoring six of the Lions’ runs in an 8-4 victory. I was at this game, so I’ll post some more thoughts on it tonight.

Jackson Liberty 8, Freehold 4: Linnette Siedler and Robyn Czapkowski, the first and second hitters in the lineup, reached base a combined seven times in eight plate appearances, and Saltzman drove in three runs as the Lions beat Freehold in a nondivisional game. Saltzman, who also earned the win in the circle, went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third that drove in Czapkowski and a two-run triple in the fifth. Siedler and Czapkowski, who both scored on the triple, scored six runs between them. They combined for three hits, two walks, two stolen bases and reached on errors twice. Saltzman’s triple, which she pulled to right center on the first pitch of the at-bat, put Jackson Liberty ahead, 5-1, but Freehold got back in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Rachel Waldorf’s RBI double. Waldorf finished 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. With the score, 5-4, and runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, Saltzman was relieved by Taylor Cwalinski, who struck out two batters to end the inning
and closed the game with 1 2/3 hitless innings.

Subject: Nomination for Shore Team
Sent: Thursday, May 28, 2009 8:17:49 AM EDT

I would like to officially nominate my left fielder, Linnette Siedler, for your travel softball team.  She is a fully committed player that showed great leadership on and off the field; this is considerably impressive considering she is only a Soph.  She was consistently my lead off batter and almost always managed to put the ball in play.  She led the team with 22 runs scored, and was also ranked among the best in the Shore with that stat, as well as her hits, at 30Her batting average was .361 and regularly stole bases because of her amazing speed.  Her quickness was often commented upon by opposing coaches as well.  She has recently been considered for the all-conference team for B-South, but a decision has not been made on that accolade as of yet.  She is a great kid who is very open to criticism and hard work.  Thank you for considering her for your team.  I promise that you will not be disappointed in what you see.  Last year, she also served as my catcher (as a Freshman) until she broke her hand.  She may offer you depth as a back up at that position as an added bonus.  Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions regarding Linnette.  Thank you.

Jersey Shore eliminated in day's third game

By ROBERT ZIEGLER; STAFF WRITER

The offense carried Jersey Shore through most of the day, but a defensive meltdown ended the team's Carpenter Cup championship hopes. Jersey Shore, playing its third game of the day, committed three errors in the bottom of the third inning that led to four runs and lost 4-1 to SOL American & Continental at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park on Monday.

The loss eliminated Jersey Shore from the double-elimination tournament. It had won four consecutive games since losing to Delaware South in its first game. Following a one-out single in the third by the No. 9 hitter in SOL American & Continental's lineup, an error on the second baseman allowed another batter to reach. The next batter hit a line drive that hit off the tip of the center fielder's glove and drove in a run to tie the score at 1. A suicide squeeze then gave SOL American & Continental the lead. The next batter hit a grounder that wasn't fielded cleanly by the shortstop to bring home a run and a throwing error on the same play allowed the fourth run to score.

Jersey Shore took a first-inning lead when Kasey Bulman scored on an error off the bat of Alisha Cumberton. Bulman, leading off the game, reached on an error and advanced to third on Meghan Ramos' single through the right side of the infield. Cumberton then hit a grounder to the third baseman, who after failing to tag out Bulman on her way back to the base, threw high over the first baseman. Jersey Shore had 29 total hits in its first two games of the day, but managed just one hit from the third inning on against SOL American & Continental.

Its best chance to get back in the game came in the fifth, when Bulman singled and Nicole Saggiomo was hit by a pitch, but Leann Ventriglia flew out to left-center on the first pitch of her at-bat to end the inning. Prior to the game against SOL American & Continental, Jersey Shore had a two-hour break that while giving the team some rest after playing back-to-back games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., might have zapped its offensive momentum. "I think our adrenaline's up when we play right after each other. I guess we got too relaxed," said Ventriglia, who played a large role in Jersey Shore's two victories. The Toms River North junior went 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and a run scored in a 13-2 win over Delaware North. Bulman went 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI in the game.

Saggiomo, Taylor McDonough, Emma Erbig, Marissa Granato, Linnette Siedler, Ani Sasala, Brianna Murphy and Daniele Raneri each also drove in runs. Ventriglia also hit a two-run single to spark Jersey Shore to a 5-3 win over SOL National & Bicentennial in its second game. Bulman went 2-for-3 and reached on an error in that game, and McDonough hit a two-run triple and scored in the third. Sasala started the first game, but Bulman and Jen Retzer again handled the bulk of the pitching duties. Retzer pitched nine innings over the three games, giving up a combined two runs on eight hits while striking out 14 and walking three.
